Most U.S. states require an officer to be licensed to work as a security guard. This security license may consist of a criminal background check and/or mandated security officer training requirements. Here is a list of the most common state requirements but this does not take in all requirements and/or updated requirements. Please contact your state government for the latest officer requirements.
A licensed security company is required to take eight hours of pre-assignment security officer training to all personnel employed as a state approved security guard prior to the employee acting in the capacity of security guard or certified protection officer. This individual state-mandated curriculum must be taught and the subjects must include criminal law and laws of arrest, uniforms and grooming, communications, some use of force, general security officer procedures, crime scene investigation, ethics and first response.
Security officer applicants must obtain a security license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), of the California Department of Consumer Affairs. Guards and Officers must be at least eighteen (18) years old, undertake a criminal history background check through the California State Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and complete a forty (40)-hour course of required security officer training. The training is broken down into sections and time-lines. First the applicant will go through eight (hours of BSIS-designed training on powers to arrest and weaponry. Then, within thirty days of getting the individual security officers license, they must receive sixteen hours of training on various mandatory and elective courses. And lastly, within six months of getting their license, they must be given additional sixteen hours of training on various mandatory and elective courses. In addition, California certified security officers are also required to finish eight hours of annual security officer training on security licensing topics. The security officer training and exam may be administered by any confidential patrol operator or by any of a large quantity of certified security license schools. In California this training can be classroom or online.
